Dare …

Global MND Awareness Day is an opportunity for us to spread the word about MND, fire up a conversation, and challenge perceptions. To show they believe in MND Over Matter, why not dare a friend, your family, or colleagues to:

  • Learn and share something about MND.
  • Ask a tough question about MND they may have been too scared to ask.
  • Do something that makes them think.
  • Challenge themselves to push a personal boundary.

Help us achieve our Goals to help those with MND

The Branch is able to offer practical and emotional support in a number of ways and we are always happy to be involved as much, or as little, as you would find helpful Raising AwarenessRead More.

Saturday 20 June 2026 … photos above
Global MND Awareness Day
is celebrated on June 21st every year. The day is chosen because it marks the summer solstice, which many see as a turning point and the start of a new season of hope. The day is a time to recognize the impact of motor neurone disease (MND) on people around the world, and to acknowledge those living with the disease, their carers, and those who have died from it. People can get involved in a number of ways, we are holding our Leeds Castle event on the very special day to many people.

This beautiful lawn resembles a perfect amphitheatre and grass-covered banks forms natural seating for visitors to enjoy outdoor theatre and picnic. The large herbaceous border reflects on the other side of the lawn, creating the most spectacular curtains to any stage. A bold selection of herbaceous plants provides exciting displays of colour and form throughout summer, and into the winter months.

There may-be deck-chairs /// on not, so please bring your own, but remember you will have to carry them.

Walk to D’Feet, Sunday 6th September 2026

Our 11th annual walk to D’Feet MND to raise funds and awareness in memory of our beloved Brenda Sheridan who started this tradition in 2015. This year the walk will be in full colour!

We will be holding a competition for the best dressed walkers and the MNDA Blue and Orange are the theme colours. You are welcome to pop along for a stroll at your own pace which is £10 per walker but if you feel up to a challenge why not choose a route and sign up to a sponsored walk for our event via the MNDA website and raise as much as you can for this amazing charity.

Registration from 9.30am with a start time of 10am – ish. Parking availability may be restricted at busy times so we advise that you to try to car share with friends if you can. Remember, to pay for your parking before you walk. Pre-booked mobility scooter hire is available and they have adapted their café and car parks to meet the needs of all. So far, this annual event has raised over £8,000 and we are hoping to smash our target to reach £10,000 this year. If you feel able, do join us for this always happy event in the Kent countryside … Google Maps

Allison Thompson,
Kielder Marathon in Northumberland, 6 October 2024

Allison’s fundraiser for Motor Neurone Disease Association

I am raising money for our local MNDA in Kent as a friend was diagnosed with this cruel condition last year. She and her husband have had support from East and Mid Kent MNDA.

In October Alli is running the Kielder Marathon in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association. She’s started her training programme and you can follow her progress here.

All monies raised will be divided equally between East Kent MNDA and Mid Kent MNDA.

IN THE BEGINNING – MID-KENT…

To look back over 30 years is quite daunting. I was able to refer to past magazines saved from the beginning of the branch and enjoyed (or wasted) many hours of reminiscing and remembering forgotten events and people … read more from Joyce.

7th July 2023 – Summer picnic for friends and family

Aylesford Priory at 11.00am – 1.00pm. Please bring your own chairs, a picnic and drinks – ice cream may be provided. We will also be holding a raffle – so please bring some cash if you’d like to take part.

CAMPAIGNS UPDATE

On Global MND Awareness Day (June 21st) I attended a drop-in event for MPs at Portcullis House in Westminster, organised by the Policy and Campaigns (P&C) Team. It went very well, with nearly 70 MPs and peers popping in (including my MP, Helen Whately). I’ve attached a few photos, but there were many more on social media and several MPs tweeted about the event, so lots of awareness was raised. I’ve also attached the Briefing Note that was handed out about research funding.
Many thanks to Elaine Coates

BOAT TRIPS 2023 … STUART AT THE HELM

That is a very wicked grin – I’m so glad I know they all got home safely!

ASHFORD MARKET CHARITY TABLES

Once again Ray Scott and his volunteers at Ashford Market have donated a generous £5,000 to Mid Kent MNDA. Amazingly, they raise this money by selling goods which have already been offered for sale and rejected at least once! At the end of a day’s trading they collect unsold items from other stall holders on the site, sort them and prepare them for subsequent re-sale.

Thanks to Joyce and Jean

Dave Smart had the idea of writing a song to raise funds and awareness of Motor Neurone Disease.

The lyrics are by Robin Fuller. The tune is traditional arranged by Gabriella Hutchings and group members

The song was recorded 29.10.2021

Ten months after my lovely wife, Lynn, was diagnosed with MND she passed away on the 12th October 2020. We were together for 51 years, a wife, mother, daughter, sister and my best friend …

Lin and Lynne’s Fundraiser for the Motor Neurone Disease Association

In 2013 my husband Howard was diagnosed with MND a dreadful terminal disease. Our children were then aged just 8 and 14 and our lives were torn apart. Watching Howard’s physical decline was heartbreaking, his mobility soon worsened and he needed a wheelchair. This was followed by tube feeding and eventually he was unable to breathe without the help of a ventilator. Howard passed away in 2016 aged 56.
